This project was conceived as an experiment in form making employing chance procedures and wood foundry patterns. The small wood patterns were photographed in random arrangements. Pairs of images were digitally printed one over the other. Anticipation or pre-visualization of the overprinting was only minimally possible. The goal of the procedures was in fact to limit conscious manipulation. The outcomes were always surprising transformations of shape. Also included in this gallery are examples where the patterns are paired with photographs of painting fragments and metal shapes and tools. Photography of wood machinery patterns (salvaged from an abandoned Hydraulic Pressed Brick Corporation facility in St. Louis), cut fragments of paintings on masonite and metal shapes, tools and measuring devices. 2012-2016
