This section presents a photographic exploration of a community on the edge of the District of Columbia know as American University Park. It was undertaken to identify the mechanisms that give some of its “architecture” character and variety beyond the typical. This is often hard to find, owing to repetition of materials and house types that were constructed as the area was developed. It is almost exclusively, as it is in many communities, the actions of owners that have the most impact. This may include: added signs, furniture, fencing personalized house numbers, paint colors, plantings or the lack of plantings and neglect. It may include the visual impact of utility connections, local topography and the passage of time. All of these factors are mostly subtle, however at times they result in accidental outcomes that enrich the streetscape.
